Totally agree with you. UI was one of the reasons for me to fork this nice project.
I've chosen Buefy (Bulma + Vue) for the frontend, and layout is looking like this (for now menu is more complex with some nested categories) and top navbar contains some more items as well.

nice UI.

Wait for Version 4.0, it will have left menus and important menus on the
top with notifications.

Fantastic news! I'm eagerly awaiting version 4.0

[~tridcatij] @slango-im ASTPP 4.0 is released now and it have this feature as you suggested previously.
Closing this suggestion as that feature is available in V-4.0
